TMJ Treatment by Dr. Saily Joshi Pune

Most people feel a sore jaw at some point and shrug it off. Maybe you chewed something tough, yawned too wide, or slept in an odd position. That kind of soreness usually fades on its own within a day or two.

But sometimes jaw pain doesn’t go away. It comes back week after week, brings clicking sounds, headaches, or a jaw that feels stuck. That’s often a sign of something more specific: a TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder, also called TMD.

The tricky part is that both types of pain can feel similar at first. Here’s how to tell them apart, and why it matters.

What “Regular” Jaw Pain Usually Looks Like

Everyday jaw soreness is typically:

If this sounds like what you’re dealing with, rest, a soft diet for a day, and avoiding excessive chewing (gum, ice, hard foods) is usually enough.

What TMJ / TMD Pain Usually Looks Like

TMJ disorder involves the joint that connects your jawbone to your skull, along with the muscles around it. When that joint or those muscles are strained, inflamed, or misaligned, the pain behaves differently from ordinary soreness.

Signs that point toward TMJ rather than regular jaw pain:

1. It keeps coming back. Instead of a one-off ache, you notice the same pain returning, especially in the morning or after long periods of talking or chewing.

2. There’s clicking or popping. A clicking, popping, or grating sound when you open or close your mouth is one of the clearest signs of a TMJ issue. Regular muscle soreness doesn’t usually make noise.

3. Your jaw feels stuck or limited. Difficulty opening your mouth fully, or a jaw that briefly locks or catches mid-movement, is not typical of everyday soreness.

4. The pain travels. TMJ pain often radiates toward the ear, temple, or even down into the neck and shoulders. Many patients describe it as an earache or a one-sided headache before they realize it’s actually coming from the jaw joint.

5. Headaches, especially around the temples. Because the jaw muscles connect close to the temples, TMJ tension frequently shows up as recurring headaches, sometimes mistaken for migraines or tension headaches.

6. You grind or clench your teeth at night. Many TMJ cases are linked to nighttime grinding (bruxism). You might not notice it happening, but a partner mentioning the sound, or waking up with a sore jaw and dull headache, is a strong clue.

7. Chewing feels different than it used to. A “stuck” feeling, discomfort while eating firmer foods, or noticing your bite feels slightly off are all worth paying attention to.

Quick Comparison

Regular Jaw Pain TMJ / TMD
Duration Resolves in 1 to 2 days Persists or keeps returning
Sound None Clicking, popping, or grinding
Movement Normal opening and closing Locking or limited opening
Related symptoms None Headaches, ear pain, neck/shoulder tension
Pattern Random, tied to an obvious cause Often worse in the morning or with stress

Why It’s Worth Getting It Checked Rather Than Waiting

TMJ disorders don’t usually resolve by themselves, and untreated cases tend to get harder to manage over time. What starts as occasional clicking can progress to consistent pain, restricted jaw movement, or worn and damaged teeth from grinding.

The encouraging part is that TMJ treatment is not complicated or invasive in most cases. At OriEase Dental Clinic, treatment usually starts with a proper evaluation to understand what’s actually causing the pain, since not every jaw pain or headache is TMJ related. From there, many patients find real relief within days simply by using a custom-fitted night guard, with a complete treatment plan built around their specific case if needed.

When You Should See a Dentist

Book an evaluation if you’re noticing:

If even one or two of these sound familiar, it’s worth getting your jaw properly assessed rather than waiting to see if it gets worse.
